Bale of Argyle Sweaters
This bale of about 100 pieces is built around one pattern: the argyle diamond, knitted in two or three tones and crossed with fine contrast lines. Shapes can run from V-neck and crew-neck sweaters to buttoned cardigans and sleeveless vests, in an assortment of sizes and models that varies with stock.
The same diamond looks very different from one colourway to the next: navy with pale yellow and pink for the preppy version, brown with red and orange for the autumn one, charcoal with rust for the quietest, sky blue on navy for the boldest. Multicolour triangle jacquards and patchworks, closer to a vintage cardigan than to classic argyle, may also turn up.
Knits run from fine to medium weight, in cotton, acrylic, wool or blends, with ribbed collars and cuffs, contrast lines over the diamonds and, on some cardigans, engraved metal buttons. Labels vary, and American names such as Sag Harbor may be in the bale.
Argyle comes from golf and preppy wardrobes, and it sells on the pattern more than on the label. Bold palettes, buttoned cardigans and multicolour jacquards stand out from the dark tone-on-tone versions, which form the base of the lot.
Cuts run from fitted to boxy, with cardigans often roomier. Sizes are mixed as received.
Knitwear goes online from the end of summer and sells through to the end of winter, peaking from October to December. The cycle repeats every year, which leaves time to clean and photograph before demand builds.
